BIO: Teacher Art

2010 will mark Teacher Art’s tenth year anniversary as a Lead Teacher @ Cottage co-op.
Teacher Art was just twenty years old when he walked through our school and has grown so much from our program and the staff and families that have supported his career as an educator and musician.
Art started working childcare and after school programs at age 15 [YMCA]. It was there that he stumbled upon Child development and attended Citrus Collage. Pryer to that he studied Theatre @ “American academy of dramatic arts” formally located in Pasadena.
At age 16 Art had already self recorded himself and had been offered indie recording deals for his expressive spokenword style of poetry and rap which landed him a Nike commercial in 1998. This lead to the development of his first album “Everybody’s mouth” and was able to fund the recording and help jump start indie art label “Sounds are active” [2001].
Teacher Art has a nice size discography of recordings and unreleased material that will make way this coming year. His style of music varies from all over the world but usually will describe his sound as “Holistic sound bathing” or “Aggressive cerebrialism”. Warning! it’s very loud in a live setting and he credits such musicians such as “Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Wu-Tang clan, Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, Portishead, Soul junk, Jimi Hendrix, L.A.F.S Collective and many more…
This year Teacher Art lived his dream and toured Europe during summer break and released his fourth album ‘Future stars and small wonders” on indie label Joyful noise recordings. He is also starting a sound art workshop for children this fall outside of Cottage and a teen music workshop at a community garden in Highland Park. Balancing a busy schedule of a day job and a night job can be a lot of work but it’s worth it!

Kid Talk
After our first Musical Monday with the Sonos Quartet, children were inspired by the instruments, one friend, a little boy, invited me to hear his violins, "Wanna hear my violin? This is my violin, come and listen" he showed me two sticks he was rubbing together under the play structure and he was making music with his mouth. "it's an electrical violin, it gets plugged in, it is not like their violins"
