who we are

Cottage Co-op is a non-profit parent-owned nursery school that follows the whole child approach to learning and development, emphasizing learning through play. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate, emergent and evolutionary.

The school makes early childhood education a family affair, allowing children to flourish and helping parents to learn how best to guide and accompany their children through the exuberant but sometimes rough waters of early childhood. The school seeks to develop and encourage self-esteem, socialization, creativity, curiosity, and respect for others.

please join us

Cottage Co-op offers information nights for new parents to learn about the school, to meet the director, and to schedule tours of classes. The application period for the 2009-2010 school year begins in January, 2009. Traditionally, because of demand, the school had been forced to place some new families on a waiting list.

Please join us for an informative evening. All we do is ask that you come prepared with questions and that you do not bring your children with you. (You are, of course strongly encouraged to bring your children with you when you tour the school.)

Because seating is limited at our school, we would prefer, if possible, that you call us to let us know which information night you would like to attend. Of course, if you are unable to call us prior to the information night you would like to attend, please do not hesitate to come anyway - we'll find space.

Check out our latest newsletter - available for download from the calendar section of the website.

what is a co-op school?

A Co-op School is a collaborative effort between professional educators and the member families. The membership is comprised of the families enrolled for the particular year. Parent members assume responsibility for many of the business functions of the school under the guidance of the Administrative Director. In addition, parents serve as teaching assistants, under the guidance of paid professional teachers. Cottage's teachers are in turn guided by the professional and ethical standards of their professional association, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). NAEYC supports the highest quality experience for young children, in part, through ongoing professional education, child advocacy and standardization of quality in school programs.

Parents at Cottage have an opportunity to get personally involved in their child's educational experience not only in the classroom but also in the operation of the school. The Cottage experience is often as growth promoting for parents as it is for children.

Cottage Nursery School is a non-profit, parent-run school that follows the whole child approach to learning and development, stressing learning through play. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate, emergent and evolutionary. The school makes early childhood education a family affair, allowing children to flourish and helping parents learn how best to steer and accompany their children through the exuberant but sometimes rough waters of early childhood. The school seeks to develop and encourage self-esteem, socialization, creativity, curiosity, and respect for others in our children, parents and teachers.

An elected parent Board of Trustees works in collaboration with the paid professional Administrative Director to support and guide the school as a whole in manifesting the child oriented philosophy upon which we were founded so many years ago. Because our membership changes each year, each year is a different experience for us all. Being at Cottage is a dynamic experience, an experience in which we hope each of our members finds the opportunity to grow.
